OK...so it looks like im the only one still awake on this blog ting...
A few things on my mind...im still under shock of the new wiley/roll deep video "good times"..... i mean... Wiley is starting to become the Bow E3 version of "S Club Seven"... that shit was such cheesy...How can u go from "When im ere" to that... im embarrassed for him... i mean...i understand you gotta make "pop" songs to get dat money... but come on... that shit is taking the piss... its like soulless. The Other day I was listening to Murder she wrote by chaka demus and pliers... thinking about my mum driving me to school as a lil kid thru south London bumping chaka demus and pliers... now that tune.... is a CHOOOOOON yeh... and everyone loves it... ANYWAYZ back to my point... WHY CANT WE SELL OUT MAKING TUNES LIKE DAT?!?!?!? If Roll Deep's "good times" sells more the Murder she wrote...I quit...Im going back to Italy...I will spend the rest of my days under a palm tree on a beach in Pulia and you will never hear from me again! SWEAR DOWN.

barnum and bailey type clowns...

What fucks me up these days is that people dont think, they just do. Maybe they do these things because it's easy or in fashion, who knows? Whatever the case may be, rarely are the repercussions considered.

Most these rappers nowadays days promote some shoot em up shit. Really, i'm not even going there because you already know that. Truth is i'm not even mad at people talking about guns and killing and shit...if that's the life they lead and people wanna buy it, that's on them.

Point is when you, AS a grown man or woman, start to make a mockery of other peoples realities and take for a joke that which has left other's blood splattered on the concrete...then you need to check yourself.

Its not a fashion statement to rock a red bandanna and twist your fingers up at the club.

I went to school in cali...firsthand i have seen generations of people banging a set. From the 2 year old toddler to the 60 year old granny, everybody affliated and involved.

It is engrained and has been so for quite some time...likewise out of a group of 7 gangbangers/aspiring rappers i was working with, two got killed, one is in jail for life and two are doing alright...the last two who knows.Ganglife is not a fad. Whole communities have suffered and lived these realities and what kind of shit is it to have people who are not from that life acting like it's nothing more then a fashion statement??? Encourging impressionable kids from all over to start wearing colors and becoming part of something they have no understanding of.

Fuck that. That's why I dont fux with drake...not only is this fuckin camel-lookin ass dude never saying shit that makes you think, or even tell a decent story but on top of all that he wants to claim some gang affliation. Bro ur from toronto, and yea i know some GT and yardie bredren that keep it 100 up there, but none of them dudes on some gangbang ish. So real talk what is this clown around clowns really about? To me he is about riding dick and thinking delusional. Otherwise why would he be throwing up gang signs. And all those "gangbangers" around him should g-check him for that shit.

And to all rappers. i dont care if your from south central, watts or chi-town where this shit all came from. But if you promote something like gangbangin as if its cool and fashionable and acceptable for anybody to be a part of, your slippin too. regulate and member that all these gangs and organizations come from people trying to regulate their own neighborhoods internally as opposed to having a predominately bigoted police department "handle" disputes etc.

So please think...aS a matter of fact live for the day but dont forget about tomorrow...BLeSS

OUT TODAY.... SERIOUS AMMO FOR SERIOUS MCs...

FIRT CITY PRESENTS:
FC004 THE AMMUNITION EP
The Ammunition EP
Following up on the Top-Producers EP, First City Records have unleashed another round of chest-thumping dubstep/grime/bashment from NYC producers Bookz, Nato and DJ Dore. There's a war on and it wont be won with guns. It will be won with shocking synths, gully bass, and fever-inducing drum patterns. Full copy after the jump

Bookz sends out the first wave of artillery with Crystal Lite - a precise blend of dubstep wobble and grimey stabs interspersed with crunked-out fx and a space-age west-coast lead. Next up, Triple Action Riddim is a bashment scorcher that leaves plenty of room for lyrics. Following his Grimey Bashment formula Nato has outfited this tight production with a bubbling square-lead, vox chants and staggered drums that are sure to get the dance moving. DJ Dore's, The Crystal World, is a rollercoaster ride of twinkling purple-funk half-step and syncopated vox samples rolled into one big acid flash-back. Nato's Mash Man Riddim follows with a jumpy grime gun-track to marshal the troops into battle. If that battle happens to be in the outer reaches of the galaxy you'll probably want some plasma rifles, force fields and a robotic exoskeleton. Another grimey-wobbler from Bookz, 136 Riddim, sets this galactic battalion against a backdrop of swinging synths and tabla percussion. Nato Closes out the final round of the Ammunition EP with the aggressive mid-tempo Certified. The track's catchy hook, eerie chimes and staccato rhythm will be running through your head for the rest of the war. With enough firepower for any MC and plenty of bass to mash up the dance Ammunition EP is a must have for any armory.

Geiom @ Dubwar

Following on the phenomenal pairing of XI and Shortstuff last month, Dubwar brings one of dubstep's most solful(couldn't help myself) producers to NYC for his debut on the F1 system at Love. More recently noted for crossing dubstep and UK funky trends, Geiom has been combining different elements of electronica, dub, and grime in his production since the 90's. Started in 2006, his Berkane Sol label has been a source of innovative collaboration with little-known vocalists as well as some of dubstep's top players (see video below). Here is a great interview with Blackdown which should give you some idea of the man behind the music. Receiving early support from Loefah and Kode 9, Geiom has been a fixture at the long running DMZ night as well as performing at countless events throughout Europe. He is joined by Brooklyn's Falty DL who's sound owes as much to so-called IDM as it does to UK garage. His productions can be found on Planet Mu and Ramp records among others. Should be a synth-full night to remember!

Events: RUSKO, BOK BOK, Darkroom & more

Wednesday saw a record high of 90° in New York. Welcome to the middle of July. As unsettling as this may be for the ecosystem as a whole, its something of a welcome head-start to what looks to be a massive summer for the New York underground scene and area bass music movers. Whatever way you might feel about his John-B mullet hawk, neon shades fetish, or his alliance with Mad Decent, Rusko is at the top of his game. In the midst of his Major Lazer Tour, the lunatic loyner has found time in his busy schedule to grace the hall-of-webster with his filthy antics. Rusko is not your typical dubstep DJ. He's a proper showman. Whether he'll show up with a bass, a keytar, a full band or none of the above is yet to be scene, but it's sure to cave the roof in. Brought to you by Boys & Girls, Methods and Mean Red to name a few. Night Moves!

Make sure you save some energy for Saturday's Turrbotax Business Edition. Turrbotax have gone from strength to strength with these events and tomorrow night's is sure to be one of best so far. Co-founder of London's Nightslugs night and record label, Bok Bok has been instrumental in reshaping the sound of UK grime/garage/house into a more tropical, poly-rhythmic and funkier beast. Above is a guest mix Bok Bok did for 1Xtra's Redlight back in March. Badman selector! He is joined by Brooklyn's own Kingdom who's gotten some attention this year for his "Mind Reader" bassline track and accompanying Bok Bok, L-Vis 1990 and Tod Edwards remixes that came out this winter. I first saw Kingdom dropping Piddy Py's "Giggle Riddim" at a Dutty Artz tropical dance party last year. Trouble & Bass's Jubilee is also a special guest on the night, guaranteeing that the night will be a full on rager. The same night, Brooklyn's finest and free dubstep monthly, Darkroom, will be in full effect so make sure to stop by 66 Greenpoint ave. to wind up the evening.

Next Friday Dubwar keeps it inna soul vibe with Geiom and Falty DL! Summers on!

Its Her World...

Photobucket

A few months late with this post but i guess its because dontsleep didnt exist when this record come out in January 2010... so this lil post is about "My World" by Mizz Beats. U may of herd me drop it in the "Recruitment" mix but def worth checking out again...Its a Stonka of a tune but not in a hype-shank-shank way... it gets u wit its laid back vibez.... its perfect for cocktails-on-south-beach, at least thats what i fink wen i hear it....So yeh, see me bussin a lil skank to this on a beach this summer sumwhere near you.... Anywayz... Its really refreshing to hear dubstep thats not a coma inducing head fuck for a change. Not a wobble in sight!. If this is the first time hearing about Mizz B. check out the following quote courtesy of Sonic Minefield.... oh yeh, also... A lil birdie told me dat she makes beats live when performing a show... Def. sutin worth paying good money for... maybe we may see her at a dontsleep event in the near future in nyc...who knows...anywayz...back to the quote...

"East London’s Mizz Beats first made her mark producing grime beats for names like Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and D Double E to name but a few, but came to prominence last year when co-producing the bubbling anthem ‘Purple Love’ with Silkie. But now as part of the formidable Anti Social Entertainment crew along with: Silkie, Quest, J5, Kromestar, Harry Craze and Heny G, she’s flexing he soulful dubstep muscles and where better to do that than on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint…"

Connect The Dots: Lloyd Parks to Vex'd

So I wanted to take a break from gorilla videos and shoe adverts (there's room for it all!) to share something on a slightly less visually stimulating yet more historically oriented tip. Lloyd Parks is a vocalist and bass player who got his start in music during the rocksteady era of Jamaican music. As a backing vocalist and studio musician he has worked with a huge number of the most prominent reggae artists of the time such as Dennis Brown, The Gladiators, The Abyssinians, Prince Far-I, Culture and more. Seriously, this man has worked with everybody! In the 70's he started his own label and produced a number of hit solo releases including the track posted below, "Slaving" (read more...). Park's original version of the song is a socially conscious working man's lament with an incredible organ line by Revolutionaries keyboardist Ansel Collins... The song became a popular riddim and was subsequently versioned/re-voiced by I-roy as "Blackman Time". I-roy's version features a strange whining violin in the background as well as a scripted introductory dialogue that makes it a classic in its own right. The video below contains both the original and the version.

What started this whole search and inspired me to write this post was the album Cloud Seed, by UK Dubstep producers Vex'd released on Planet Mu last month. Vex'd are an amazing duo (currently disbanded I believe) who helped to define the sound of Dubstep in its early days and continue to point the genre in new directions with their solo works.
Most of the album is composed of previously unreleased material and VIP mixes of past releases. It also contains some really interesting remixes of modern neo-classical works(?) which I've never heard of before. While the production on this album is great, on the whole, I find it a little too "atmospheric" or subdued for my taste. However, what inspired me to write this post was a track midway through the album that samples the "Slaving Riddim" posted above. "Disposition" features lyrics from Jest who effectively updates the sufferers them to a post-industrial landscape: "babble about the days we chased the crazed men/who once enslaved men/who once enslaved the operative phrase/now emancipated with operative stations/2nd floor windows of houses dilapidated..." Its questionable whether Vex'd used the sample to refer to Jests lyric or whether he responded to the use of the sample, or neither. Either way I found this track to be an inspiring example of what connects dubstep to dub reggae and hip-hop. Stay tuned for future time-travel connect the dots and reggae flash backs. Safe.
