Two Sevens Clash

Yesterday marked my first release under the Max Echo moniker on partners in crime First City Records. It's the result of at least 6 months of re-educating myself in garage, house, bashment and UK funky genres. Obviously there is always more to learn; this is my take on the music that influences me at the moment thrown in with everything that defines me musically and that, along with the technology I use to produce, will likely never cease to be a presence in my sound. The 5 track EP is titled after a momentous clash between NF supporters and anti-facist groups in the South London borough of Lewisham. This is an effort to tangentially inject history into the work I produce. History is always a part of recorded media in some way, but I wanted to draw attention to this part of the history of social justice movements and community organizing. I feel that a large part of what would be the radical left in the western world, particularly in the U.S., has been beaten into submission by images of power and the dehumanizing realities of late-capitalist empire. My EP wont change this, it's just a reminder that people used to clash in the streets. One day it may happen again but it wont happen on twitter lol ... anyway here's the album at $4.80 which is cheaper than you will find most digital EP's on the web. Thanks to all who have given me support and inspiration in my life. More time forward!

oh yeah! here's a free track to go with it >

DONTSLEEP NYC Job Opportunities!!!

Do you love Dancehall/Bashment Music?
Do you like going to music events/shows/clubs?
Do you wanna get paid for it as a part time job?

Firstly, let me introduce myself...
Hi, My name is Mad Scientist. I am a music Producer here in
NYC. Its one of my main joys in life and most of the time I get paid for it too!
Its a great feeling to get paid for what you love to do. I have only been producing for a few years now, but I work hard and I am always pushing myself to do better. I am currently working on a compilation mixtape of some of my best collaborations with amazing artists from NYC, Jamaica, and London. Look out for it over the next few months its going to be BIG! Music I produce has also been featured on BBC 1xtra, Rinse FM and XXL Magazine. I now sell riddims (exclusively) to clients all over the USA, Europe, the Caribbean and even as far away as Australia.

I am looking for representation and/or a business partner to make more money with.
I have got this far with NO advertising and NO promotion. I need a determined person who loves music to work just part time with me and find me more clients. Payment will be commission based. I need to spend more time making music and less time finding/negotiating with clients.

What kind of person am I looking for?
  • You must be outgoing, confident and down to earth.
  • Even if the product sells itself, you still have to be a good sales person
  • You must be between the age of 20 to 30ish and live in NYC.
  • You must love music and have a basic knowledge of the music scenes.
  • You must be able to keep track, organize and maintain good working relationships with clients.
  • You must be respectful and loyal, with a thick skin when dealing with rude, ignorant, pretentious, or egotistical people, ESPECIALLY in the music scenes
  • You must have good internet skills for social networking sites etc...
  • You must be available to attended events at night time, sometimes till very late.

I just need hard working/dedicated soldiers.
Email me a paragraph or two with why u would be good for this opportunity at....
madscientistmgmt@gmail.com

Or contact me on Facebook...

Thank you.ble$$/Dontsleep!

DontSleep Tees / Booty Slammer

T-shirts are here! The first in a series of t-shirts planned for this year ... By spring we might be up to a full line, but first we're going through this limited run of M, L, XL, logo tees. If you feeling the retro logo, like what we do and want to support or have a genuine love for the game, this gem-hungry pacman is for you. Printed on American Apparel 100% cotton adult T-shirts. Go here to purchase. Only $24 smackers!(shipping included)

Speaking of smackers here's a track you've probably heard on some of our shows this past month. Lot's of nice things to say about this raunchy EP but I'll try to sum it up in brief. As with much of the other producers to grace the Night Slugs vaults, Velour combines grime's sarcastic yet deep rooted love for 80's synths with house music's allure, minimalism and palatable drum arrangement. It may be a cheap shot but it still feels pretty good to see people moving to this kind of shit over some tear-out wobbler any day! Vaguely reminds me of something that might appear half-way between Mizz Beats and Dam Funk.

DontsleepTV 007

The weekly ustream sessions continue this evening with special guest Liondub on the set dropping reggae, jungle, dubstep and more alongside me and Bookz. In case you missed it, here's The Heatwave's impromptu guest appearance from Monday. It's a mad thing with Benjiman D holding it down proper on a DJ tip, plus "hand-made" music videos, plenty of ridiculous behavior and of course a smashing selection from Gabriel Heatwave.

Massive shoutout to those that tuned in and the entire Hot Wuk massive. Was an honor to have them in the studio and we hope they come to destroy it Katsup-side of the pond again soon. Make sure you tune in this evening and next week when we have Turrbotax resident C-sick dropping in on the DontSleepTV.

Oh yeah if you want to get busy on some proper ram dance party thing this is the spot to go to: Que Bajo in Williamsburg where Heatwave are doing their last set before skipping back to the UK. braaap

JME - The Instrumentalz

jme,grime,boy better know,dontsleepnyc

swear i was gonna do a post about JME's new album entitled Blam but I came across this release which dropped in June and decided to run with this cause its definitely a must have for any Grime DJ, Producer, or MC ...

if you know Grime music then you definitely know who JME is... as co-owner + CEO of
Boy Better Know Records he's released a large number of ground breaking tracks... "Deadout","Serious", "96 Bars", "Famous" etc.. etc.."

JME is also quite a prolific producer (not to mention music mogul), and this release showcases his production skills.. Personally, I've been waiting for a lot of these instrumentals to come out; there's a lot of bangers on here... think I'm partial to "Mayhem" , "African Zulu Warrior" and "Back 2 Basics"...to name a few.
this is def one to cop... u can get it here.. can't say u aint got any Grime Instrumentals to play..

Loco for Barcelona

OK, when my wifey told me about this i thought it must be sum kind of joke... anyways...yes that "nuttah" girl Shakira and Dizzee in a song together...whats next?!?!? Wiley and Madonna?!?!? ok so its cheese, fun cheese maybe and i cant be mad at the E3 kid for getting that pop "P" in. Fuck it. why not?!?!? I WOULD! But what I really like about this video is not them, or the music, but the fact its filmed in Barcelona. And this is for a very good reason.

I was lucky to travel there last summer and explore this amazing and vibrant city quite well. I was impressed by it so much, it almost put NYC to shame. Spain and Barcelona in particular is becoming a place world renowned for so many reasons. Its becoming a cultural capital in Europe, for food, art, music, nightlife and in some ways, the better standard of living, cheaper rents, beaches, mediterranean climate and rich culture have me wondering why the fuck i dont live there already?!?! Ok so its not New York. A totally different animal, a far older one but still comparatively un-contaminated by the hipsters and gentrification thats killing off the real NYC, So far at least....So a few hours flight from London, and half that to my family in Italy, its tempting! Expect me in Barcelona more often!!! and If you guys out there get a chance or a few spare minutes, google and look at whats going on in Barcelona, you will not be disappointed.

Dont worry, its not going to turn into a travel blog but DontsleepBarcelona.com? Maybe, just maybe.

Sound Test: Sleep Like A Head

I hate to say it ... I need sleep. 6am and I've just finished a track I started 9 hours ago. It's a fairly good mix, made mostly in the box. I added a few vocal samples from an accapella that seems to be cropping up lately in some circles ... time to get some sleep!

Eastsidaz Vs. Sweat Riddim FREE DOWNLOAD!

Back in the day, before I got into UKG and all of that stuff, It was strictly bashment, blues/soul, and west coast gangsta rap in my yard. One of my favourite and I think under appreciated groups was Snoop Dogg's EastSidaz (Snoop, Tray Dee and Goldie Loc). Like all good things, it came to an end, especially when Tray Dee got locked up for doing a drive by on sum youts. When making "Street" music there is always that danger of the lifestyle affecting the music and vice a verser, like what happened with most of my former crew First City...but its this very danger and reality that gives the rap that extra special quaility of realness that alot of these modern studio gangstas dont have. So in honor of Tray Dee, and all those caught up in the system... this goes out to u!

Wknd Report

New York had an amazing summer as far as outdoor events and dubstep lineups go, and so far the fall is shaping up to be a seamless continuation of much the same caliber - minus the outdoor. Tonight, Mount Kimbie bring their brand of crackling, garagey funk to Public Assembly for The Bunker, alongside versatile deep-end locals Sepalcure and Dave Q of Dubwar. Expect hear more techno and ambient influenced sides of dubstep churned out in live double-team tweakery. The hipsters have been hungering this sort of thing since Burial's last album, so there's sure to be quite the turnout. I honestly have no idea what to expect from these wizards!

It's going to be a difficult choice for many as the Dub Police don Caspa heads up a massive night at Webster Hall on one of the better sound systems bumping in NYC. He's joined by Bass Fueled Mischief bad boys Hellfire Machina, Anitserum and Vibesquad. Posi D and MC Track will be holding down the proceedings for all the womp heads inside. At $1 before Midnight this an absolute steal and the perfect counterbalance to electro-acoustic extravaganza at Public Assembly. I'll be at both putting the word out about our Full Spectrum night coming up on the 15th of this month. Stay tuned for more nightlife updates. Bless

Marcus Visionary Humble EP 1

Marcus Visionary may very well be one of the most prolific and consistently raw drum and bass and new school ragga jungle producers working today. With a third full album already underway, Marcus's second album hits the digital shelves with the first batch of tunes taken from the forthcoming album featuring unique VIP refixes from Marcus and a sick remix from Bladerunner. Absolute rave anthem bizness, do not sleep!! Full copy and player after the jump.

Liondub International presents the first of two EP's From Marcus Visionary's forthcoming album, Humble. Where his _ saw Marcus applying his formidable drum & bass/ jungle production technique to the dubstep, soca and funky format, Humble is a return to the roots of jungle music in which Marcus first honed his craft. Humble is also an homage to the dancehall reggae music that inspired a generation of ragga jungle producers to meld Jamaican sound system pressure with the urban grit and militancy of breakbeat and hardcore. This most clearly heard on the first two tracks of the EP where Sugar Minot, a most loved cornerstone artist of Jamaican roots and dancehall reggae, lends his superb vocal talents. Ruff & Tuff is a multi-layered match made in Studio One heaven. The lovers rock anthem Mean Girl Dub - already much versioned by Mr. Minot - gets a future-facing jungle re-lick that could make a cold hearted murderer get up and skank-out. On Borderline, the sweet sounds of Sugar Minot's vocal are contrasted by the furious Amen rhythm and make this track an absolute classic that is sure stand the test of time. Musical Murderation starts out in a stripped down dubby style but quickly turns darker with a bristling bass line and merciless reverse drum edits. Bladerunner's jump-up remix is equally dark and relocates the vocal harmony from the end of Marcus' version to a beautiful half-tempo break in the middle of the song. If the two Sugar Minot tracks didn't make your hair stand on end, Bounce, featuring a dancehall vocal and rap lyric from Jah Dan Blakkamoore, most certainly will. The hazy pads, icy chords and hard-edge drum pattern of the vocal and following dub version make this the perfect ending to a priceless EP.
