"Sometimes the rules have to be broken … "

First City Records and DontSleepNYC are setting it off with a bang this year - The Big Bang that is Insomnia Mixtape: No Rest For The Wicked. A massive mixtape compilation 5 months in the making featuring a battalion of lyrical and vocal talent bridging Dancehall, Grime, Hip-Hop, and Electronic music scenes. Top-producers Max Echo, Bookz and Mad Scientist have teamed up and put in numerous sleepless nights to bring you over an hour of twisted original productions and skits. Selections from M.I.A.'s recent M/\Y/\ album, Serocee's Bullring Riddim, MC Zulu's No Lies, and rising Jamaican Dancehall/Hip-Hop star Unslaught are among some of the most recent material presented here. First City soldiers Germz and MC Kush bring in the Grime pressure and together with yard emperor Shizzle make sure the UK scene is well represented indeed. Hot Grabba don Black Mattic, the exquisite Miss Natalie Storm and the silky sounds of Natel put Kingston on the map in a big way, while Jahdan Blakkamoore, Homeboy Sandman and DNC bring you the darker streets of NYC. Insomnia Mixtape is a response of sorts to the current trends emerging in club/bass music genres and a sign of things to come. The sheer amount of talent and raw production on this compilation is sure to keep you bouncing through the night shift into the next millennia!

Insomnia Mixtape: No Rest For The Wicked

First City Records is the publishing arm of First City, New York's premier Grime crew, formed in 2007 and headed by producers Bookz and Nato. Since then they have released a steady march of heavy EP's and full albums showcasing a formidable selection of underground artists and producers from NYC and the UK. 2010 saw the emergence of the Mad Scientist, whose Grimey Bashment project and numerous other releases broadened the scope of the label to include grime-influenced Dancehall and Bashment sounds. In October 2010, First City Records introduced the Funky stylings of Max Echo on his diverse debut Lewisham EP. 2010 is just the beginning and this next year is sure to see even more high-quality material from the First City Records hitting the streets and the clubs.

Mad Scientist

(First City Records / DontSleepNYC)

While his laboratory is currently stationed in Queens, New York, the London-born engineer/producer Mad Scientist (aka Nato/Mad) has roots going all the way back to Italy. On moving to NYC, Mad Scientist began his production career at IAR and learned the ropes of beat-building and engineering at Z-Music's "Dan The Man" Productions, where he worked for elite Hip-Hop clientele such as Lil' Kim, Maino, Boot Camp Clik and Uncle Murda. In 2005, as the first waves of Grime music started to reach American ears, he launched his production career into orbit as the co-founder of First City, NYC's first Grime outfit. By 2007, with the group's two producers and three MC's, First City had steadily become a fixture of New York City's burgeoning Dubstep scene, caught the attention of BBC's 1Xtra program and gained international status through the support of Rinse FM's DJ Tubby and DJ Scratcha. Today Mad Scientist is a full-time production machine, churning out exclusive beats night and day for music and entertainment clients around the world. As owner of First City Records, he continues to unleash dutty grime and dancehall riddims on the masses with his Grimey Bashment trilogy and Ammunition compilations. When not tapping out the next riddim scorcher or prize-winning remix, Mad works as author, and managing director of DontSleepNYC. Set loose on the world, no one is safe from the evil genius of Mad Scientist!

(First City Records/Dont Sleep NYC)

Bookz is a Grime and Dubstep DJ / Producer located in Brooklyn, NY. An avid music fan from day one, Bookz has been involved with music of all genres for quite some time. Originally from VA / DC Bookz was involved with the local punk rock scene playing bass in various bands until hearing the new sounds of drum n bass. Grime & Dubstep quickly grabbed his attention and in 2005 he established New York City’s premier grime crew, FIRST CITY, along with UK producer Nato. His tunes have had support from Newham Generals’ DJ Tubby and BBC Radio 1′s Tim Westwood among others. 2010 has proved to be quite a productive year, with Bookz contributing to "Top Producer" and "Ammunition E.P"; both well received E.P.'s released on First City Records. Expect to see more of Bookz on the DJ circuit as part of the Dont Sleep NYC crew, as well as more forthcoming releases on First City Records.

Max Echo

(First City Records/Dont Sleep NYC/Amphibian)

Max Echo (DJ Dore) is a producer/DJ and New York native. He has been banging out beats since 2002 in all styles of electronic music. His current focus is funky bashment but he will occasionally build a dubstep, grime or drum and bass track for kicks. He has been soaking up the vinyl for time and gigging properly since getting his start alongside NY grime crew First City and Code Of Arms owner Nebulla at Konkrete Jungle. His DJ skills have brought him to the forefront of NYC's bass music culture and promise to send him farther afield in the future. He also writes for several online music sites including DontSleepNYC and Halcyonline.
